Archaeology Internship and Experience Program 2026 (Summer) – Jiangxi, China

The International Youth Cultural Exchange Association (Hong Kong) (IYCEC) was established in 1998 by a group of socially responsible entrepreneurs, educators, and social workers dedicated to youth development. It is a government-recognized charitable organization committed to promoting cultural exchange and research between mainland China and Hong Kong youth, as well as organizing various cultural and artistic activities.

To enhance Hong Kong youth's understanding and knowledge of archaeological work, the Centre has previously collaborated with the Wucheng Archaeological Team of the Jiangxi Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology during the summer and Christmas holidays of 2024, as well as the summer and Christmas holidays of 2025. These collaborations successfully secured a total of 28 internship placements for Hong Kong students, arranging for local university students to participate in archaeological experiments and experiences at the site. The students demonstrated an exceptionally proactive and excellent attitude towards learning, consistently receiving high praise from the archaeological team mentors. Furthermore, thanks to the continuous support from your Department/Programme and various universities, 11 university students will form a Joint University Archaeology and Culture Student Association this year to continue their extended learning and knowledge transfer activities.

In recognition of the students' outstanding performance – which includes discovering two sites alongside their mentors, finding nearly 400 ancient cultural artefacts on the surface, and consistently demonstrating high-quality research and learning behaviour at the excavation site – the Jiangxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology has recently approved the Centre to once again lead students to Wucheng. This time, students will directly participate in the Qingjiang Basin archaeological survey work. This summer, 16 students will be recruited to stay at the base camp, receive theoretical training in archaeology, and participate in tasks such as cleaning section profiles, conducting ground surface surveys, and organising unearthed artefacts.

This is an exceptionally rare opportunity, with only 16 places available. We sincerely invite students enrolled in your Department/Programme to apply and seize this valuable chance for archaeological experimentation and work experience. The majority of the programme costs have been subsidised. The Centre will also invite professional instructors from the China Hong Kong Underwater Cultural Heritage Archaeology Research Association to provide archaeological theory training for the selected students.

Given that previous rounds attracted nearly one hundred applicants, selections for this recruitment will be conducted in batches via interviews. The application deadline is set for 30 March 2026. We earnestly hope for the support of you and your Department/Programme in actively promoting this programme to students, whether via email or other means. For enquiries, please contact Project Manager Mr. Ng at 3101-0560.

Thank you for your assistance!
